Session 6: Spending Triggers and Emotional Money

Think before you tap.

Session 6 takes us into the psychology of spending. Students explore emotional triggers – boredom, stress, peer pressure – and how marketing and social media amplify them. They analyse real-world scenarios like impulse buys, payday splurges, and “treat yourself” culture. A group activity maps spending habits to emotional states, helping students identify their own patterns. The myth-busting segment tackles beliefs like “Retail therapy always helps” or “If it’s on sale, it’s saving.” Students learn strategies to pause, reflect, and redirect spending urges, including budgeting apps, wish lists, and the 24-hour rule. The reflection prompt – “What’s the difference between a want and a need?” – promotes personal insight. By the end, students will be more aware of their emotional relationship with money and equipped with tools to make more mindful choices. This session blends psychology, self-awareness, and practical strategies.
